VTN and Ciena Complete Successful Coherent 100G Network Trial Across Vietnam

Vietnam Telecoms National Company (VTN) under the Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) and Ciena® Corporation announced the successful completion of a next-generation 100 Gigabit per second (Gb/s) network trial on VTN’s backbone network, representing the first use of coherent 100G technology in Vietnam on March 11th, 2011.

The trial was conducted in February 2011, spanned 500 kilometers between the cities of Vinh and Danang, and follows the recent deployment of Ciena’s coherent 40G solution across VTN’s nationwide optical backbone. The successful trial proves the operator can leverage its existing network assets to cost-effectively upgrade its nationwide core backbone network as bandwidth demands continue to increase.

The successful trial of coherent 100G technology on VTN`s network provides them with a seamless upgrade path from 10G and 40G to 100G to accommodate the growth of high-bandwidth services like IPTV, broadband Internet, 3G mobile traffic and Ethernet business services. As plan, VTN will double their network during the next few years.

The pioneer in coherent technology for optical transmission, Ciena is also the market leader in this area, with more than 6,000 coherent 40G/100G line interfaces shipped to more than 75 customers across the globe, including deployments in eight countries across the Asia Pacific region. Ciena’s ActivFlex 6500 platform, powered by Ciena’s WaveLogic^™ coherent optical processors, supports both 100G and 40G coherent transmission and is the first system to offer both commercially.

Vietnam added 1.5 million telephone users in first two months

According to the Ministry of Plan and Investment’s report on telecommunication, Vietnam added 1.5 million telephone subscribers in the first 2 months of this year. The figure of mobile phone users reached 1 million mobile phone users and 50,000 fixed telephone subscribers.

At the end of February, the Vietnamese mobile phone subscribers totaled 172.6 million, an increase of 32.5% compared to the same period last year, fixed telephone subscribers reached 16.5 million.

The number of Internet users in Vietnam reached 3.83 million, up 25.3% from a year ago.

Vietnam attends ASEAN meetings on ICT

A Vietnamese delegation, headed by Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Nguyen Thanh Hung, is attending the two meetings on telecommunications and information technology (ICT) in the Malaysian capital city of Kuala Lumpur.

The 10 th ASEAN Telecommunications and Information Technology Ministers Meeting (TELMIN) and the 11 th ASEAN Telecommunications and Information Technology Senior Officers Meeting (TELSOM) kicked off on Jan. 13 and drew the participation of over 300 representatives of the ICT sector from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and its dialogue countries, including China, Japan and the Republic of Korea.

The meetings this year are aimed at summing up ICT achievements and appraising operations and the management role of the ICT ASEAN Fund. The 10 th TELMIN also seeks to adopt and launch the ICT ASEAN Masterplan which will chart the region’s ICT development for ASEAN to become a more cohesive bloc.

On the occasion, Malaysia and Vietnam officially handed over the director and deputy director positions of the ICT ASEAN Fund to Myanmar and the Philippines .

TELMIN is held annually to bolster information and communications ties in the region while TELSOM meets at least once a year to share information and experiences in promulgating policies effectively./.

Vietnam has just exploited 5% of 3G capacity

After one year of launching in Vietnam, most of Vietnamese network subscribers has used mobile 3G only for Internet connection, Deputy Director of Vinaphone Zone II Nguyen Thien Bang noted at the Seminar “ mobile applications in 3G Era”.
However, he also confirmed some ideas which said that 3G will replace ADSL is not correct and hardly to come true because of the character of 3G wave is unstable and the same in every areas inside the city. A part from that, high expenses is one of the factor that 3G can not compete with ADSL.

Sharing the same view, Marketing Director of Yahoo Vietnam also said that Vietnam has just exploited only 5% of 3G’s capacity.
However, sharing the different ideas of operators, the telecom enterprises think the main reason for short of 3G technology – based applications is the unreasonable profit sharing mechanism between operators and the content providers. For example, in Vietnam when a mobile application has been made, the operators take 70%, whereas the content providers receive only 30%. In contrast, at App Store of Apple when selling a application the operator takes only 30%, and the content provider receives up to 70%. As the result of this fact, for application development in Vietnam is quite difficult, though the abilities of providers are possible.
More than one year has passed since the day 3G technology first launched in Vietnam by Vinaphone, but the mobile applications for 3G was still very poor, not so many services have met the demands even Vinaphone announced to provide over 50 services and Mobifone was 60 services. Many experts who participated in the seminar agreed that we have to wait for several years for witnessing the mobile applications development and optimization of 3G potential in Vietnam.

As the expectation of organizers, Vietnam Telecom/ Electronics/ Internet & IT2010 which opening yesterday was the ideal destination for advanced services, technologies, especially 3G.

Vinaphone has confirmed its position as the best new service providers in Vietnam Telecomp 2010. Series of new broadband services with high speed and special such as : Video call, mobile broadband, MMS, mobile music, game download, mobile TV, mobile camera, e-wallet MoMo, MaxSIM 128k, and entertainment service portal Chahca have been launched this time.

Sharing the ideas at the sideline of Event, Deputy Director of Vinaphone Ho Duc Thang said high speed and broadband applications will be the key services of Vinaphone in Vietnam Telecomp 2010, being the first 3G technology provider in Vietnam, Vinaphone is trying its best in bringing 3G services to the users with fully applications.
Besides 3G services, a series of mobile phone which converge 3G functions also be introduced by a lot of local and international telecom enterprises. NTT Docomo from Japan which participated in Vietnam Telecomp Exhibition for many years once again makes the Vietnamese teen users feel excited with the fashionable 3G mobile phone having both camera and video functions which introduced in Vietnam for the first time.
According to the organizers, though it was the first day, but broadband technology services, especially 3G were really the focal points of visitors.
Being one of the important event in Vietnam Telecomp/ Vietnam Internet – IT/ Vietnam Electronics 2010, the Prize for Best Exhibition Stall voted by visitors and media has been announced. Number of fixed phone users reduced

It was a time, fixed phone played as an effective connection bridge in communication, but now this form of communication is not the first priority. According to telecom experts, it is not the failure but only the unavoidable trend of development.

Basing on the latest data from the General Department of Statistics the number of new telephones in the first 10 months of 2010 reached 35.2 million, up 5.4% as the same period last year.

But, in the total 35 million subscribers, most of them are mobile, fixed phone only 772 thousand, reduced 39.6% against the last year. It’s not difficult to recognize that the development of mobile subscribers is much faster than fixed phones ( up 44.7% as of October 2010).

Only in Hanoi city area, telecom enterprises are loosing about 60 thousand fixed subscribers and estimating in 2010 the revenue from fixed services of VNPT Hanoi only reaches 1,170 billion dong, reduced 13% compared to 2009.

By the end of October 2010, total telephone subscribers estimated about 161 million, increased 40.2% as same period last year, of which 144 mobile subscribers and 16 million fixed subscribers. The Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) keeps the leading position with 11.7 million fixed and 72.1 million mobile subscribers.
Viewing this data, Vice Minister of Information and Communications Ministry Le Nam Thang noted that the slowdown trend of fixed phone service does not only happen in Vietnam, but it’s also the same situation in many countries in the world as of hot development of mobile services. Through the time, mobile services have shown its conveniences and easy to understand the habits of the users, that’s they will pay for the most comfortable services.

Many people confused with fixed services definition. We have to understand that only fixed phones is loosing customers not fixed services. Because at this stage, we have many others fixed services such as IPTV, Internet services which have the potential development.

Telecom enterprises have pay much for fixed phones expenses but not for fixed infrastructure. In many foreign countries, the investment for fixed infrastructure is much concern, even they have mobile technology 3G and 4G.

However, we have accept the fact that the increasing of mobilization trend in the market and the demand of the users, so it makes mobile becomes the heavy competitors of fixed network. So, in the view of marketing it’s an inevitable competition.

CT-IN shakes hand with Orange Business Services

Joint Stock Company for Telecoms and Informatics (CT-IN) under the Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) and Orange Business Service have just announced the cooperation to supply information technology and telecom administration services in the local market.

Based on the next generation network technology (NGN), the service will help local enterprises with branches nationwide well manage its information technology infrastructure as network connection, security, data storage and system maintenance.

To Hoai Van, vice chairman of CT-IN, a member of VNPT, said at a function to announce the cooperation the same day that the two companies had successfully piloted the application of the technology and that the service might debut in the first quarter next year.

Orange Business Services now has Internet Protocol Virtual Private Networks (IP VPN) in 57 cities of 27 nations worldwide. It is the first provider of Multi Protocol Label Switching service in Vietnam

VNPost joins the fast money transfer plan in Asean area
